Our Team

Vivienne Beisel

Hello, I’m Vivienne Beisel, a lawyer who has helped hundreds of Claimants obtain settlements for their Indian Residential School and Indian Day School Claims.  I understand that filing a claim can be stressful and overwhelming.  Many of my clients tell me that they would have given up if they had to do it themselves.  If you are struggling with the claims process, I can reduce your stress and anxiety by helping you tell your story and obtaining the documents needed to prove your claim.

Who may receive compensation?

  • Every Claimant who can prove they were placed in a private home while attending school will be paid $10,000 without having to prove abuse.
  • Claimants who suffered psychological, physical, and sexual abuse at the boarding home may receive additional compensation, up to $200,000.00.
  • The Personal Representative of a deceased Claimant who was alive on July 24, 2016.

What you will have to prove

  • For the basic $10,000.00, you will have to prove that you lived in a boarding home between 1951 and 1992
  • In addition to your claim for the basic $10,000.00, you have the opportunity to file another claim for psychological, physical, and sexual abuse, as long as you file it before the deadline.

How to Apply

When applications become available, August 2024, you may choose to:

  • Complete the application yourself
  • Have a lawyer assist you at no cost to you.  Canada will pay the legal costs.

Although you could fill out the Indian Boarding Home Claim on your own, you may want to consider hiring a lawyer if:

  • Your claim involves a serious sexual or physical assault
  • You have had residential school or day school claim in the past and have been denied compensation
  • You stayed in more than one boarding home or attended more than one school
  • You were sexually or physically assaulted more than once or by more than one person
  • You’re not sure if what happened to you was a sexual or physical assault

When hiring a lawyer look for someone who:

  • Understands trauma and empathizes with you
  • Meets you face-to-face whenever possible
  • Talks to you directly, not through a form-filler/paralegal
  • Writes concisely, cogently, and persuasively
  • Obtains documents to help you prove your claim
  • Asks the right questions to help you tell your story
  • Knows what the decision-maker needs in order to decide in your favour
  • Makes sure that your application is complete, detailed, and filed on time

If you are struggling with the claims process, we can reduce your stress and anxiety by helping you tell your story and obtaining the documents needed to prove your claim.
